NYR ambassador, The Lord Mayor Lorraine Wearne’s joy of reading

I am delighted to be able to participate in the Ambassador program and encourage others, particularly young people to read.  Whether reading is done by holding paper pages or an electronic reader, knowledge comes from the written word.  We would know nothing of the   history of our world if it had not been recorded by others for the future.  Literacy should be about fun, imagination and knowledge and if I can help anyone to appreciate its benefits I have achieved much.

 My favourite books

The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

The Thomas Covenant Chronicles by Stephen R. Donaldson

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCulloch

The Power of One by Bryce Courtney

Seven Little Australians by Ethel Turner

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Carrie by Stephen King

A campaign to encourage reading is a wonderful idea and the National Year of Reading does this.  Reading imparts knowledge.  Knowledge is power.  Power needs the lessons of history to temper its use. Reading therefore should produce a generation of  knowledgeable sensible leaders of tomorrow.
