Book club discussion notes: Forbidden lessons in a Kabul guesthouse by Suraya Sadeed
The First Wednesday reading club met on 7th March. The book discussed was “ Forbidden lessons in a Kabul guesthouse: the true story of a woman who risked everything to bring hope to Afghanistan” by Suraya Sadeed. This is a biography set amidst some of the most inhospitable conditions in war-torn Taliban-seized Afghanistan. It is an adventure story telling of Sadeed’s inspiring fight to bring aid, education and peace training to Afghan citizens. Continue reading

I’ve just finished reading “Futuretainment: yesterday the world changes, now it’s your turn” by Mike Walsh. The book was recommended to me by my son’s partner who is in her 3rd year studying a Communications degree and, while the book was one of her texts, she assured me it was easy to read and a great explanation of the trends in technology and entertainment – and she was right!!! Jeanette Winterson is the author who shot to prominence when her novel “Orangesare not the only Fruit” was published in the 1990’s. Original and riveting it is about growing up in Manchesterin the 1960’s, she is adopted into a fundamentalistic, apocalyptic Christian family. She depicts her mother as a grotesque monster with an ineffectual husband, who makes the young Jess’s life a misery, finally she breaks free and leaves home at sixteen. The novel was made into a groundbreaking and controversial BBC series which won awards and made Winterson an overnight success in the world of comtemporary English literature. Continue reading
