This month, the reading group has discussed Li Cunxin‘s biography "Mao’s last dancer‘. The book was popular by then. Most of members enjoyed reading this book. However they were also conscious about its accuracy.
Some said it was a good read and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was bravery for the author to be a defector in to a brave new world.
Some thought Li was selffish when becoming a defector because he ignored possible political consquences for his family. Author was probably influenced by the publisher and the book was written for American market. He showed no insight into inequlity. The book is overly descriptive.
Some questions were asked such as did the author write this book himself or it was written by the others? Were his memories real or constructed?
