Book Review: Lost & Found by Brooke Davis

Lost & Found

Brooke Davis

Summary

At seven years old, Millie Bird realises that everything is dying around her. She wasn’t to know that after she had recorded twenty-seven assorted creatures in her Book of Dead Things her dad would be a Dead Thing, too.

Agatha Pantha is eighty-two and has not left her house since her husband died. She sits behind her front window, hidden by the curtains and ivy, and shouts at passers-by, roaring her anger at complete strangers. Until the day Agatha spies a young girl across the street.

Karl the Touch Typist is eighty-seven when his son kisses him on the cheek before leaving him at the nursing home. As he watches his son leave, Karl has a moment of clarity. He escapes the home and takes off in search of something different.

Three lost people needing to be found. But they don’t know it yet. Millie, Agatha and Karl are about to break the rules and discover what living is all about.

Comments

This book is a little quirky with a strange sense of humour.  While we enjoyed parts of the story; in particular, Agatha Pantha’s Chair of Discernment, on the whole we found it hard to engage in it fully. We found it hard to believe in the characters.  While this was a nice and easy ready, that we think would make a good holiday read, we found the ending just left us with too many questions.

All Australian Summer Reading Challenge

Welcome to our All Australian Summer Reading Challenge!

This Summer City of Parramatta Library is running an ‘All Australian Summer Reading Challenge’ for readers 18+ years.

The challenge runs from Monday 4 December 2017 to 26 February 2018.

It’s easy to participate, read 10 books written by Australian authors over Summer to enter a draw to win 1 of 3 Australian book packs!

You might be asking yourself why we decided to run an All Australian Summer Reading Challenge? The answer is simple really, City of Parramatta Library staff are huge readers of Australian authors, and we also get lots of enquiries from our readers to recommend Australian authors. Given that we thought it would be a great opportunity to assist our readers in discovering the wonderful world of Australian authors available at the Library!

Don’t forget you can always choose to enjoy an ebook as part of your challenge or even a selection of the great audio and eAudio books we have available. Personally I love listening to audio books, and most of my favourites are written by Australian authors. At the top of my list for audio books would have to be Beauty in Thorns by Kate Forsyth. While I read and loved the book, the audio book added such depth and feeling to the writing. Anyway enough about audio books, I could write another 500 words; instead I will share with you my Top 10 Australian authors, which believe me was really hard to narrow down!

In no particular order:

Kate Forsyth

Caroline Overington

Sara Foster

Inga Simpson

Kylie Kaden

Trudi Canavan

Nicola Moriarty (yes she is related to Liane Moriarty and in my opinion a talented writer)

Jane Harper

Craig Silvey

AB Facey

To check out a wider list of authors take a look at our Australian Authors Guide and Australian Writers from Diverse Background.

Good Luck with the challenge everyone, I hope you discover some great new authors to read!

Happy Reading

Sophie Hannah’s Hercule Poirot

A new Poirot movie is recently on our screens: Murder on the orient express, a famous adaptation of Agatha Christie’s book, again and again.

Christie is a most loved author, the creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. All of her books have been  reprinted and sold over 2 billion copies  in various languages. Murder on the orient express was adapted for TV and movie  many times, with some great actors portraying   Poirot. While this time it is Kenneth Branagh’s time for Poirot I personally favoured David Suchet, a Poirot in action for 25 years. But I did like Kenneth Branagh playing as the detective Wallander in the TV series UK version, adapted from the books by Henning Mankell. Continue reading
