The Guardian’s ‘100 best books of the 21st century’

The Guardian recently shared their list of the ‘100 best books of the 21st century’ and we’re excited to see who made the cut.

#97 is part of my all-time favourite series of books, I enjoyed the movie adaptation of #65 and I love the copy of #47 I got for my birthday. #21 is currently in my pile of books to read and I can’t wait for the last book in the trilogy of #1 to come out next year. Check out their list to discover who made it and who missed out.                                       Nisa.

Book Review – My Family And Other Animals

My Family And Other Animals by Gerald Durrell

ABOUT THE BOOK

Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family – acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long suffering mother and Roger the dog – take off for the island of Corfu.

Recounted with immense humour and charm, My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood.

During their meals together, they recount the memories and experiences of their gastronomic lives as well as those of their more personal histories. For a period of four years, it was Marlena de Blasi’s task, her pleasure, to cook for the Supper Club. What she learnt, what they cooked and ate and drank and how they talked form the fundamental truths of this book.

Reading Hour

Thursday, the 19th of September is Reading Hour – a once in a year event when we stop what we’re doing to disappear into the world of books. Library staff are excited to be sharing some of their reads with you. I’ll be reading the new Margaret Atwood book The testaments, Jody will be listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Katherine will be engrossed in A woman like her: the short life of Qandeel Baloch by Sanam Maher. Check out some recommendations for our junior audience by Antonia and Sandra below:                                                                                              Nisa
